So you have decided that homeschooling is the way to go for your child's education - congratulations on taking this big step; it can be one of the most rewarding things you can do for your child. However, there are also a number of challenges which you face as a homeschooling parent. It can be difficult to even know where to begin. Don't worry though; this article will take you through a few of the things you should deal with as you begin to homeschool your child.

First, you should familiarize yourself with the homeschooling laws in your state. They can vary widely from state to state, so make sure that you know. Not knowing is not an excuse. The authorities will still hold you accountable. It is also a good idea to join a homeschool legal group. These groups charge a yearly membership fee, but it is well worth the money if you need to defend your right to homeschool your child. One of the most popular choices is the Home School Legal Defense Association.

Secondly, you should invest in a good curriculum guide. There are so many choices out there, it can make your head spin! Having a good comprehensive curriculum guide will help you find the one that will work for your family. On the topic of curriculum, it is also a good idea to set a budget for this. You can spend as much or as little as you want. There are so many resources out there for the taking! Don't be afraid to change your curriculum if it doesn't work out. That's the whole point of homeschooling, being able to tailor your approach to your child's specific needs.

Joining a support group may also be a good idea. It can get overwhelming having to take care of every aspect of your child's education. The input of other parents who have chosen to homeschool can be very helpful. Look around to see if there are any such groups in your area. If not, why not start your own? You may be surprised how many people in your own neighborhood homeschool their children. You could also opt for an online support group; there are many to choose from and this way, you can find help any time of day or night.

Last, do your research. There are hundreds of good books on the market on the subject of homeschooling. Your local library is a good source for this information. Ask other families who homeschool for their thought son books which helped them get started. Homeschoolers are usually more than happy to help a newcomer. You can also look online, where there is a wealth of information on the topic.

Remember that home schooling can and should be an enjoyable thing for both you and your child. This is one of the best ways that a parent can take an active role in nurturing a child's natural curiosity about the world and love of learning.
